Guidelines for the Perfect Espresso – and How to Freeze Coffee Properly

How to Make the Perfect Espresso at Home

A great espresso doesn’t happen by accident. It’s about balance, precision and fresh coffee. Follow these simple guidelines to get the best out of your home machine.

1. Use Fresh Coffee

Freshly roasted coffee makes all the difference.
Ideally, use beans that are 7–30 days from roast date.

Always grind just before brewing.

2. Dial in the Dose

Use 18–20 grams of coffee for a double espresso (depending on your basket size).

Be consistent — weigh your dose for repeatable results.

3. Grind Matters

Your grind should be fine — like table salt.

If the shot runs too fast → grind finer.
If it drips too slowly → grind slightly coarser.

4. Aim for the Right Extraction Time

A balanced espresso should extract in about:

25–30 seconds

You’re aiming for:

  • ~36–40g of espresso from 18–20g of coffee
    (1:2 brew ratio)

5. Watch the Flow

The espresso should:

  • Start slowly

  • Flow like warm honey

  • Have a rich crema on top

If it gushes — it’s too coarse.
If it barely drips — it’s too fine.

6. Clean Your Equipment

Old coffee oils ruin flavor.

Clean:

  • Portafilter

  • Shower screen

  • Group head

  • Steam wand (if used)

Daily cleaning = better espresso.

Final Tip

Consistency beats perfection.
Change only one variable at a time when adjusting.

Great espresso is built on small, precise changes.
